Frequently asked questions

The name Darius Wells is actually a reference to both a ship and a person.

The S.S. Darius was built in England in 1892, (named after Darius I, King of Persia) and was largely used to transport cargo such as horses. In 1912 the ship was bought by the State Government, rechristened, and became the S.S. Kwinana.

Clara Wells owned a general store across from where the wreck of the S.S. Kwinana laid in 1922. As a post-mistress, she marked mailbags Kwinana Wreck to distinguish the area from Rockingham, leading to the area later being named Kwinana Beach.
